​Senior research scientist and consultant to members of university faculties (University of Western Ontario; UWO) and to researchers/ medical professionals at St. Joseph's Health Care in London, Canada.

​I originally come from the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (Mainz, Germany) and started in 2003 as a post-doctoral fellow at Schulich Dentistry (UWO). In the following years I worked in several positions as a research associate (e.g. biomineralization, oral biology, chemistry, material sciences).

The current larger projects focus on two main aspects:

  • The development of advanced materials and technologies for the production of antibacterial and optical/energy-saving coatings. Together with Paul Charpentier (Chemical & Biochemical Engineering; UWO) and his group, I focus on the development of coatings for windows that can control both light transmission and heat flow. In addition, antibacterial coatings for the food and hospitality industry are being studied. In collaboration with Silvia Mittler (Physics & Astronomy; UWO) the optical properties (transparency, refractive index, etc.) and the bacterial decay are tested and conditions adapted.

  • A second field of research deals with processes in the areas of biomineralization (e.g. bone, kidney stones) and biomimetic material sciences (e.g. highly oriented collagen films). I am particularly interested in polyelectrolyte-controlled mineralization processes and the molecular features that are involved at several stages in these events. Based on the knowledge gained, the fabrication of implants and the development of tools/components for biotechnological applications is intended. The studies are conducted in collaboration with Douglas Hamilton (Anatomy & Cell Biology; UWO), Paul Charpentier, Silvia Mittler, Jeremy Burton (Lawson Health Research Institute, London ON) and members/faculty of the Bone & Joint Institute (UWO) and St. Joseph's Health Care.
